With only two days remaining before the runoff election in Georgia, signs point to Saxby Chambliss (R) holding his seat. The latest polls have Chambliss ahead of Democrat Jim Martin by an average of 4.7%. Heck, even the ultra-liberal DailyKos poll shows Chambliss winning by 6%.

If Chambliss wins, the Democrats would not be able to get a filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats. The left needs to win this race and the Minnesota recount to get there. Neither looks very likely today.

I would prefer to see Saxby Chambliss lose and Norm Coleman (R) defeat crazy Al Franken (D) in Minnesota. That would keep the Democrats at 59 seats and rid the Senate of another unethical character.

Samantha Power, an advisor to Barack Obama who was forced to resign after calling Hillary Clinton a monster, is back. President-elect Obama has chosen her to work on his transition team for the State Department.

Powers is one of fourteen members on the agency review team and is expected to help prepare for the monster's nomination. Samantha Power apparently went hat in hand to Hillary to apologize. Apparently, she didn't have the stones to stick to her original (correct) opinion.

Over $7 Trillion in Bailouts

It seems that every day brings another government bailout of a mismanaged company. Well, the free hand-outs are starting to add up. A stunning $7.7 trillion has been pledged by the government on behalf of taxpayers.

To put that figure into perspective, it is more than half the GDP of the United States. It is equivalent to $24,000 for every citizen of this country.

You can't just print money forever. These massive bailouts will trigger a sharp rise in inflation eventually. It won't be today, but it will come. In addition, the value of the U.S. dollar will plummet if these funds are allocated.

The government should not fear a recession. It is a necessary part of the business cycle. Let these companies fail and allow market forces to resolve the situation.

Citigroup Gets Bailed Out

The largest bank in the United States is now owned by the government. The U.S. Treasury Department decided late Sunday night to give Citigroup $20 billion and backstop a staggering $306 billion in bad loans.

In return, the government will receive warrants that are convertible to common stock at $10.61 per share. When the warrants are exercised, the Treasury will own a significant percentage of Citigroup shares. It is enough to give the government contolling interest in the firm.

Government-owned companies is how socialism begins.

GM Board Dismisses Bankruptcy Option

Despite spending their company into the ground, the board at General Motors has dismissed the idea of bankruptcy.

Unfortunately, bankruptcy may be the only option available to GM. They don't have enough money to continue as a going concern. In the third quarter alone, they spent $6.9 billion more than they raised. I don't imagine the fourth quarter will be any better.

Domestic Auto Market Share

Notice that the annual demand for cars in the United States has been relatively steady even as GM and Ford's market share plummets. This chart was four years ago.

The chart below was last year. GM and Ford continue their rapid decline in market share. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are gaining.

The Asian automakers (who employ American workers in American plants) have been taking market share away from Detroit for decades. Toyota should supplant GM as the domestic market leader in 2009. Honda will likely push Chrysler down to fifth place and could challenge Ford for third place.

The point is that the Detroit automakers are a smaller and smaller percentage of domestic auto production. They are not as important as the executives would have you believe. The industry can easily handle the failure of one of more of these companies.

Dow Sinks Below 8,000

While American auto industry executives were taking their private jets down to Washington to plead for taxpayer money, the stock market plunged 427 points to finish under 8,000 for the first time since March, 2003.

Begich Increases Lead Over Stevens

The State of Alaska is finally getting around to counting the rest of the ballots from November 4th election. As the 24,000 remaining ballots are counted, Mark Begich (D) is growing his lead over convicted felon Ted Stevens (R) in the Senate race. Begich now leads by 2,374 votes.

In an odd turn, Alaska now claims that turnout broke a record. Initially, it was reported that turnout dropped 13%. It looked very suspicious given the circumstances. It's amazing how many ballots showed up after attorneys came to town to investigate. I guess you can't get away with election fraud...even in Alaska.

Job Losses Mounting

It is well known that President-elect Barack Obama is about to inherit an economic disaster. Unfortunately, it could be even worse than previously expected.

In financial services alone, the numbers are devastating. Here are some of the companies that have announced layoffs in just the past few weeks.

Citigroup - Layoffs could rise above 35,000, or 10% of their workforce

Fidelity Investments - eliminating 3,000 positions

JP Morgan - Planning to cut thousands of jobs

Goldman Sachs - 3,260 jobs cut.

Morgan Stanley - approximately 4,600 jobs

This will get worse before it gets better. Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and PNC Financial will soon announce layoffs at the firms they acquired (Wachovia, Merrill Lynch, National City). In addition, employees at Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, and Countrywide Financial have already lost their jobs.

This is just one sector of the economy. Other industries are also expected to suffer.

The unemployment rate in the United States will increase rapidly during the first six months of the Obama administration. I hope he's ready for it.

Prop 8 Protests Around the Nation

After enormous financial support from churches, a ban on gay marriage (Proposition 8) passed in California a couple weeks ago. It has not gone over well. Today, there will be coordinated protests in 300 cities across the country in support of gay marriage. Find your city here.

Count me in as a strong supporter of gay marriage. I am also a believer in the separation of church and state. When church groups throw their money into the political arena, we should strip them of their tax-exempt status.

Churches have been discriminating against gays and lesbians for decades. The Mormon and Catholic churches are bigoted, vile institutions that know nothing of the love and peace that they preach. Hopefully these protests will spark a consensus to remove their tax-exempt status and treat them as any other organization.

Begich Increases Lead

It looks like Senator Ted Stevens (R) is going down after all. Mark Begich (D) has increased his lead over the convict from 814 votes to 1,022 after the Elections Division counted another 14,508 ballots.

The remaining ballots to be counted are in districts that favor Mark Begich, so his margin should continue to rise.

Ted Stevens is going to lose. The Democrats will increase their majority to 58 seats with Minnesota and Georgia still to be decided.

Don't Believe the Hype

No matter what the politicians say, the American auto industry is not in terrible shape. The auto industry in this country is much more than GM, Ford, and Chrysler. Many foreign car companies have manufacturing plants in the United States and employ American workers.

Honda has production facilities in Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama. Nissan turns out cars in Tennessee and Mississippi. Toyota builds automobiles in Texas. Volvo makes trucks in Virginia and North Carolina. Mercedes manufactures luxury cars in Alabama. In many areas of our nation, the auto industry is thriving. Domestic auto production in the United States is actually increasing!

The American auto industry can easily survive the failure of three companies. When a company fails in an industry, the stronger players step up, take market share away, and increase their workforce The situation is no different in this case.

The only issue is the concentration of jobs in Michigan, which can be rectified to some extent. With the help of the U.S. government, the State of Michigan can entice Honda, Nissan, Toyota and others car companies into building production facilities in their state.

The states listed above brought foreign auto firms to their area by offering tax breaks and other attractive benefits. Local government officials took this action because it created jobs for American workers. It would not be difficult for Michigan to offer a similar deal.

In the meantime, the federal government can extend unemployment benefits in Michigan and help auto workers find jobs in other states. The cost to taxpayers would be exponentially reduced.

How Many Ballots Are There?

Election officials in Alaska are preparing to count 50,000 absentee and early ballots on Wednesday to determine the outcome of the Senate race. In addition, there are 20,000 more ballots that have yet to be authenticated. That would make 70,000 ballots left to count.

A few days ago, the Anchorage Daily News said the figure was more than 81,000. (see below) Why is there now an 11,000 vote difference? In an election where less than 300,000 people participated (supposedly), a gap of 11,000 is quite large.

Number of Ballots Increase in Alaska

The suspicious election in the State of Alaska is growing more peculiar by the day. Originally it was reported that 9,000 early ballots and 40,000 absentee ballots remained to be counted. Today, MSNBC put the number of absentee and provisional ballots at 55,000 and the Anchorage Daily News claims that more than 81,000 ballots remain uncounted.

Many are questioning the validity of the election itself as the overall turnout declined, despite a large increase in registrations and the high-profile nature of the race. With the growing number of absentee ballots, perhaps some of the "missing" votes have been found. If so, Mark Begich (D) may actually have a chance to win against the convict.

Rigged Election in Alaska

I am convinced that Tuesday's election in Alaska was stolen. With a high-profile Senate race and their own Governor on the Presidential ticket, the number of people voting supposedly declined by 13% versus 2004. I find that impossible to believe, especially considering that early voters set a new record this year in Alaska.

In addition, the polls were nowhere near the actual results in any of the three races. Here are the results for the President, Senate, and House.

Poll Average: McCain (R): +14.5

Actual: McCain (R): +25.3

SENATE

Poll Average: Begich (D): +10.3

Actual: Stevens (R): +1.5

HOUSE

Poll Average: Berkowitz (D): +8

Actual: Young (R): +8

Every poll in the days leading up to the election showed Mark Begich and Ethan Berkowitz winning comfortably. Polls can be wrong of course, but can every single poll be wrong by this much in all three races? I doubt it.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this wreaks of corruption. There are missing votes up in Alaska somewhere. I'm betting they've disappeared from very Democratic precincts.

Four Senate Races Undecided

The Democrats have picked up five seats in the Senate thus far, bringing their total to 56. They could increase that number as four races remain undetermined.

Oregon: Gordon Smith (R) leads Jeff Merkley (D) by 7,351 votes with 77% of precincts reporting. However, the votes not yet counted are in a highly populated and heavily Democratic county. Expect Merkley to pull this one out.

Minnesota: Norm Coleman (R) is ahead of Al Franken (D) by only 462 votes out of 2.9 million cast. An automatic recount will take place. This race could go either way. It'll probably be won by whoever has the better lawyer.

Alaska: Convicted felon Ted Stevens (R) is leading Mark Begich (D) by 1.5% or 3,353 votes. Up to 40,000 absentee ballots and 9,000 early ballots have not been counted yet. Expect Stevens to hold onto the seat. Whether he actually serves or not depends on his appeal.

Georgia: Even though Saxby Chambliss defeated Jim Martin 49.9% - 47.7%, neither candidate received 50% of the vote. Georgia law requires a run-off election if nobody achieves 50%. The run-off election will take place on December 2nd. I would anticipate Chambliss keeping this seat.

Republicans should hold at least two of these seats and prevent the Democrats from attaining a filibuster-proof majority.

Yes, Yes, Yes

That is how I cast my vote on the three ballot questions in Massachusetts. The questions were to eliminate the state income tax, to change marijuana possession from a crime to a civil offense ($100 fine), and to ban greyhound racing at two tracks in the state.

The tax base in my state is astronomical, so any chance to reduce them is warranted. I would also prefer to pay taxes through choice. By that I mean that the state should generate revenue through sales and property taxes, two areas where a citizen must choose to buy something before being taxed.

On Question 2, I believe our police have better things to do than chase potheads around. On Question 3, dog racing is subsidized; that sealed it for me.

I made sure to vote against John Kerry in the U.S. Senate. This makes up for my hold-my-nose vote for him in 2004. I went with the Libertarian candidate, although I know he has no chance of winning.

Oh yeah, and I voted for Barack Obama!!! If you read this blog regularly, you already knew that.

The Undecided Voter

According to RealClearPolitics, nearly 6% of voters are still undecided. If history is any guide, the undecideds will break significantly for John McCain. That is because in past national elections between a black candidate and a white candidate, the undecided voters break heavily to the white guy.

In many battleground states, Barack Obama is not polling above 50%, which means he needs some of the undecided voters to move into his column. In North Carolina, he is at 47.8% and in Ohio, he gets 48.8%. In Nevada, Obama is at 49.3% and in Virginia he polls 49.8% of the electorate.

I do believe Barack Obama's ground game is vastly superior to John McCain's, which is why I have predicted an electoral landslide victory. However, if McCain can match his get-out-the-vote operation and undecided voters break his way, this election could be much closer than the experts think.

Dick Cheney Endorses John McCain

Is the current Vice President trying to get John McCain to lose? Surely he must know that his endorsement is like wishing death on someone. Barack Obama has, of course, jumped all over Dr. Evil's endorsement.
