The Forgotten War

Activists gathered around the globe on Sunday in order to get world governments to take action in Darfur. The genocide that has been occurring in the Darfur region of Sudan has killed hundreds of thousands of people. Millions more have been left homeless.

The Sudanese government is committing these atrocities. They have also refused to allow for U.N. troops to enter the country. The protests that took place yesterday in London, New York, and elsewhere were designed to pressure the American and British governments into taking action. To date, nothing has been done by either government.

There were over 20,000 people in Central Park, yet it was barely mentioned by the mainstream media. It is well known that protests (of any kind) do not generate good ratings.

What's stopping the U.S. and the U.K. from taking a tougher stance in Darfur is the war in Iraq. George Bush and Tony Blair have depleted the resources of their respective armed forces and they do not have the capability of going into Sudan to fix the problem. That is why Western governments are requesting 20,000 United Nations peacekeepers be allowed in Darfur.

If not for the war in Iraq, Western leaders would be making demands and not requests. The Sudanese would capitulate because they would have no choice.

When we leave Iraq, you will hear sharper rhetoric and action from the British and the American governments, but not before. People will protest, they will make demands, and they will be outraged, but in the end nothing will be done. It is a sad, but true reality.
