Monday, September 10, 2007 - 12:00am The Gay Senator from Idaho to Withdraw Guilty Plea Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) is not going away quietly, much to the dismay of the Republican party. The Senator plead guilty to disorderly conduct after attempting to have sex with an undercover police officer in an airport bathroom in Minnesota. Even though he plead guilty over a month ago, Larry Craig seems to think he can take it all back.
Every day this story continues, the further it erodes the base of the Republican party. A gay GOP Senator caught in a sex sting does not rally support from the bible-thumping, conservative voters in the party. Republicans pride themselves on being anti-gay, so they would like to get rid of Larry Craig as soon as possible.
Democrats are staying quiet on this issue as well, trying their best to get out of the way as Republicans fall on their sword. With the exception of Arlen Specter (R-PA), Senator Craig has no support in his party. However, that hasn't stopped him from fighting.
This is a classic case of a dirty politician refusing to yield power and control. Larry Craig has been a Washington insider for so long, he doesn't know what to with himself otherwise. He's praying that another story comes along that will push him to the back page and make everyone forget his situation. Senator Vitter (R-LA) hoped for the same thing and somehow got his wish. Craig wants the same. If he survives, he can go back to the Senate and vote against gay rights like he always had before.
