Thursday, September 20, 2007 - 11:30pm Massachusetts Governor Banking on Casinos Newly elected Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick (D) has outlined a plan to bring three casinos to the state in order to boost revenues. More and more states are figuring out that the revenue flow is just too good to pass up. In neighboring Connecticut, Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino and Foxwoods bring in billions to the state each year.
True to his liberal form, Deval has already spent the billions of dollars that are projected to be raised. Rather than cut taxes or (god forbid) reduce spending, Deval is set to increase spending on pet projects that include a $1.4 billion extension of the commuter rail and $1 billion for a life science project. He has also stated that bridge and road repair would be addressed, but that simply implies that repairs had been ignored in the past.
If you are not a fan of Democrats, look no further than the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to build your case against them. The casino issue is par for the course. The state has a long history of taxing their residents to death and never repealing any increases. The additional casino revenue would be an enormous boost for the state, but you can be sure that income and property taxes will go nowhere but up. You would think, logically, that an increase in revenue would lead to a decrease in taxes. That would make too much sense though.
Deval Patrick will have a tough time getting his proposal through the legislature, but it seems destined to be passed in one form or another. Massachusetts will have casinos!
It is only a matter of time before all other states follow suit and establish casinos on their land. The expansion into Massachusetts is just the first step. Political Critic - political blogs, conservatives, liberals, democrats, republicans, blog, political opinion. |
