Friday, September 15, 2006 - 12:30am Republicans Rebel Against Bush Torture Plan Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Warner (R-VA), Susan Collins (R-ME), and John McCain (R-AZ) approved a bill today in the Senate Armed Services Committee that runs directly against what the President wanted. In fact, President Bush had gone to Capitol Hill only hours prior to press lawmakers to ignore most of the Geneva Conventions and allow for torture of prisoners.
These Republicans were actually smart enough to think a policy through. Rather than haphazardly create new rules, they understand that if you hold prisoners indefinitely and torture them, then the same fate will befall U.S. troops when they are held prisoner.
Even General Colin Powell, Bush's former Secretary of State, said in a letter that the "world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism." The General was far too kind in his wording. The world has known for some time what Bush has been doing and they already doubt our moral superiority.
The bill passed very easily in the Armed Services Committee and it could go before the full Senate next week. Unfortunately, it will probably never make it to the Senate floor because the administration does not want a fight within its own party only six weeks before the election. They will find a way to ignore the argument until at least November 8th. Political Critic - political blogs, conservatives, vlog, liberals, democrats, republicans, video blog, political opinion. |
