The
letters 'R' and 'T' in the alphabet are pronounced Erte in
France. That is how Romain de Tirtoff picked his
pseudonym when he moved to the country. The name stuck
with him and the 2013 Erte calendar shows much of his work
from Paris. Romain de Tirtoff was born in 1892 in St.
Petersburg, part of the Russian Empire. The Erte alias
he used was his way of not disgracing the family name.
His dad had wanted him to become a marine officer, much like
the rest of the family. Romain chose design, which was
very much frowned upon. The Erte 2013 calendar proves
that his decision was the right one, as his legacy lives on
years after his death. He passed away in 1990. |
