Way off
the southeastern coast of Australia is the country of New
Zealand. The island nation is located in the Pacific
Ocean and is virtually isolated from other countries.
Australia is a solid 1,250 miles away. Nonetheless,
New Zealand has thrived and these 2011
calendars are a testament to that. The 2011 New Zealand calendars show the beauty of enormous North and South
islands. The largest and best known city in New
Zealand is Auckland, but the capital city is Wellington.
It was colonized by the United Kingdom, but eventually won
its independence in 1931.
One
interesting fact about New Zealand is their status as a
nuclear-free zone. As a result of this status, U.S.
ships were essentially banned from entering the country
(they do not declare which ships are nuclear and which are
not). In retaliation, the U.S. suspended its
obligations to the ANZUS treaty. That issue has
strained the relationship between the two countries. |
