This prize for winning the championship is unique to hockey. The 2004-05 season did not occur due to a strike, so there is currently no team in possession of the trophy, but it will be awarded once the NHL resumes.
The NHL is resuming after a one year strike that say players
lose and owners win. A salary cap was instituted that
was lower than any player had hoped. The players had held out
for an entire season, believing they were worth more
millions than they were. Although hockey is a great sport,
it is one without a television contract and one with low
ratings that does not generate a lot of revenue. Many
changes will be made for the 2005-06 season, one of which
will be to eliminate all ties.
Finally, in 2005-2006, the National Hockey League resumed
play and the Carolina Panthers won Lord Stanley's Cup. |
