The rookie season of Ben Roethlisberger was fruitful as he led the Steelers to a 15-1 record and a trip to the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots.
The Steelers had beaten the defending champions rather
handily in week seven of the regular season, but the
Patriots were without their starting wide receiver, two
starting offensive lineman, and a cornerback. In
addition, they lost Pro Bowl corner Ty Law in the first
quarter. By the time they played again, the Pats were
at close to full strength. The Patriots defeated them and won a trip to Super Bowl XXXIX, but the Steelers had a great season nonetheless.
