Born in 1931, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1984 for his work in South Africa. Bishop Desmund Tutu achieved worldwide fame for his opposition to apartheid in South Africa. He is an activist and an archbishop. Tutu became the head of the Council on Churches in the mid 1970's and the position allowed him to unite the churches to fight apartheid. He had become deeply involved in political issues, especially the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Bishop Desmund Tutu has challenged the Israeli government to treat all people with dignity. He believes that the way Israel has treated Palestinians comes up to the level of apartheid. It is no small statement.
