He is regarded as one of the great heroes of Mexico due to his role in the Revolution to rid the country of Diaz.  When Emiliano Zapata was born, Diaz had been in power for three years.  In 1910, another candidate, Madero, challenged Diaz.  Emiliano Zapata quietly joined up with him while everything was peaceful.  However, violence broke out and Zapata quickly became the general of the army that came together in his home town.  Madero was victorious, but soon Zapata assembled another army to force Madero to help his people. Madero was eventually overthrown.  A bounty was put on Emiliano Zapata's head and he was executed on April 9, 1919 after being lured into a trap.
