FDR is the only person ever to be elected more than twice to the highest office in the land. Since the law has been changed to limit presidents to two terms, that record will most likely never be broken. President Roosevelt overcame many obstacles in his rise to the top, most notably a crippling disease. Franklin D. Roosevelt was confined to a wheelchair. He had become paralyzed due to polio since 1921. Despite this, he became Governor of New York in 1929 as a Democrat. Four years later, Roosevelt became the president. He stayed in that position for 12 years and helped the U.S. get out of the depression and he led them to victory in WWII. Franklin Delano Roosevelt is considered one of the great American presidents.
