He was born in a suburb of Pittsburgh and grew up to be the Secretary of State in America. George Marshall enlisted in the military as a young man in 1901 and fought valiantly in World War II as the General of the Army. George Marshall served in the United States military until his retirement at the end of the war in November of 1945. Despite his retirement, Marshall was named Secretary of State two years later. His plan to help Europe recover after the war was known as the "Marshall Plan", which became famous and led to him receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. Six years later, George C. Marshall passed away.
