He was born in Nebraska and was given the name Malcolm Little. He assumed the 'X' in order to replace his slave name. Malcolm X's father was a minister and preacher who was strongly influenced by the great Marcus Garvey. Malcolm X became a popular and well-spoken leader for the Nation of Islam. However, tension mounted inside the organization and other leaders were jealous of his popularity. When asked about JFK's assassination, he implied that it was a good thing. Malcolm X believed that since JFK had failed to reign in violence, then it was appropriate that he was killed. Less than two years later, Malcolm X was assassinated while giving a speech in New York.
