He was born in August of 1913 into a Jewish family in the country of Belarus. Menachem Begin's father was a hard-core Zionist and a leader in the community. Both of Menachem Begin's parents were killed in the Holocaust. In the 1930, Menachem was working on becoming an attorney. However, even though he escaped the Nazis, he was captured by the Russians and imprisoned for a year in 1941. Begin entered Israeli politics in 1948 and 29 years later, he became the Prime Minister of Israel. Menachem Begin met with Anwar Sadat and Jimmy Carter and agreed to remove Israeli forces from the Sinai Peninsula and return the land to Egypt. For their efforts, they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. |
