Due to
his disgraceful role in the Watergate scandal,
Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to
resign his office. This headline from the London Herald is on August 9th, 1974. Nixon's resignation came after Congress started the procedures to impeach him. His presidency ran from 1969-1974. Richard Nixon was actually re-elected in 1972 after his first four year term. When he resigned, his approval rating was down to 25%. Remarkably, 25% of Americans actually approved of the job he was doing. Richard Nixon was one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States. He died in April of 1994.
