Ronald Reagan served as President from 1981-1989. Prior to that, from 1967-1975, he was the Governor of the State of California. In his years as President, he ran up the federal deficit to record levels. By the time he left office, the national debt of the country had tripled. His foreign policy was wrought with disaster. Reagan involved the U.S. military in many battles and gave arms to multiple terrorist organizations. He provided arms and funding to Saddam Hussein in his fight against Iran as well as to the mujahideen in Afghanistan. President Ronald Reagan also provided arms illegally to Contra rebels in Nicaragua as well as invading Grenada and Lebanon. He pleaded ignorance on the Iran Contra scandal causing a large number of people in his administration to be convicted or quit as a result.
