One of the dominant airlines in the United States in the 20th century, TWA's existence came to an end in 2001 when their assets were bought by American Airlines. The airline came into existence in 1925 and was known as Western Air Express. It merged about five years later to become T&WA. The famous Howard Hughes purchased the company in 1939 and grew it to become a leader in the industry. In 1946, it began making transcontinental flights and until the early 1970's it was the only airline to fly to Europe. Howard Hughes became a bit eccentric in his later years and he was forced out as chairman in 1961. By the mid 1980's, it had hit financial trouble. |
