A magnificent island and a favorite vacation spot.
Tahiti is home to nearly 170,000 people plus many
tourists. It covers a distance of about 400
square miles and is 28 miles long. The locals
here are Polynesian and it has been inhabited since
around 300-800 A.D. The people are French
citizens and they enjoy all the rights and rules
that citizens of France have. It was
discovered by Europeans in the late 1700's and, as
Europeans do, they attempted to colonize to some
extent. With many Europeans coming over, they
also brought diseases and their way of life to the
land. Their presence caused much hostility and
the diseases became so rampant that the population
was down to 6,000 by the early 1800's.
