Music
Television, or MTV, debuted on August 1, 1981. It was
the first and only television network devoted to playing
music videos. Even though they started out playing music videos, it is a rare occurrence to see them these days. Other sitcoms, game shows, reality shows, and the like took over and music took a back seat on MTV. In the 1980's and into the early 1990's, MTV was a powerful force in the music industry, but their popularity has declined markedly.
These MTV t-shirts reflect the way the network is now. MTV has also run a number of cartoon programs, including Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Aeon Flux, and Celebrity Deathmatch. MTV Networks now owns a number of other music related stations, including CMT (Country Music Television), and VH1 (Video Hits 1). MTV is also responsible, in part, for launching reality television programming. The Real World began in 1992 and featured a group of young people thrown together to live in the same house for number of months. MTV typically cast for conflict, so they would have a lot of drama to film. |
