Shown are two
Coon Rapids t-shirts from our controversial cities category.
Named after raccoons that were often found in the creek, Coon Rapids
is now associated as a slur. The Coon Rapids shirts may not be
here long, as the name may change. |
Coon Rapids, Minnesota T-Shirts
|
The
suburb of Minneapolis called Coon Rapids is located in Anoka
County in the eastern part of Minnesota. The town's
name is derived from (Rac)coon Creek Rapids, which is a
section of the Mississippi River. The Coon Rapids
t-shirts have the name written boldly on the front.
Because of the negative connotation associated with this
word, many have sought to change the name of the city.
Unfortunately, the motion to change it has failed many times
in the local government. The Coon Rapids t-shirts do
signify raccoons and the logo of the town has been changed
back to better explain the name. Currently, the mayor
of Coon Rapids is Tim Howe. It is surprising that city
officials would not just add the letters 'Rac' to the name
to become Raccoon Rapids, Minnesota. It is the animal
the town was always known for. Shortening the name of
the animal has created far too much controversy. |
