In
Androscoggin County about a fourth of the way up the State
of Maine is the town of Lewiston. With 35,000
inhabitants, it is surprising the second largest city in the
state, behind only Portland. The Lewiston t-shirts
give the town an identity. Other smaller towns like
Kennebunkport, Bangor, and Augusta get more attention, but
this one is bigger. The native Lewiston t-shirts
should be worn by all, including the Bates College kids.
The school has only 1,700 students, but they represent a
close-knit community. When Muhammad Ali knocked out
Sonny Liston on May 25, 1965, he did it in Lewiston at the
Central Maine Civic Center. That is arguably the most
famous moment from the town. |
