The
thirty-fifth state admitted into the Union during the
American Civil War was West Virginia. It was admitted
as a separate state initially and was segmented off of the
Commonwealth of Virginia. One hundred and fifty some
years later, it has an odd reputation as these West Virginia
t-shirts attest to. The quote is "It's All Relative in
West Virginia" which implies that all the people are related
to each other. Of course that is not the case, but
folks in the other forty nine states enjoy making jokes
about it. The other West Virginia t-shirts are more
traditional, with pictures of trees and the sun setting.
Today, the state is home to 1.8 million people, which is
down slightly from over two million residents in 1950.
West Virginia is one of the few states to decline in
population in the last fifty years. |
